Accessibility Features

“AIDS in Africa: Scenarios for the future” is a website designed to enable easy access to the persons with disabilities. This website is Bobyy AA certified and is a site friendly to users of assistive technology. Bobby is a certification for accessible wesbsites which is based on the "Universal Web Accessibility" standards as laid down by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C/WAI).

Some of the accessibility features of the website are:

  • All images have an alternate text description so that users using screen reading software know about the image.
  • The website is resolution independent and the pages expand or contract to fit the screen resolution of the user’s computer.
  • Hyperlinks have been given detailed alternate text descriptions to help the user understand the purpose of each link.
  • Font sizes and font styles are not fixed thus making it easier for the users to customize the screen to their liking. This feature helps the elderly and low vision users to expand the text size as they prefer. They can also override the site style-sheet with their personal style-sheets. In Internet Explorer this can be done through the "tools" menu, then selecting "internet options" and then clicking "accessibility"
  • Font sizes can also be changed through "View" menu, then selecting "Text size" and then clicking "Larger/Largest"
  • Access keys have been provided to navigate main navigation links on each page. This helps faster navigation. Access Keys include:
    • ALT + S – Skip all navigation elements and start reading from the main content area.
    • ALT + L – Left toobar
    • ALT + B –  Bottom toobar
    • ALT + H – Highlights section. Available only on home page
